Event description:

After losing his parents to the world’s longest civil war in Sudan, Lorem Aminathia spent 8 years of his childhood in a refugee camp in Kenya. Raised a group of older boys, he launched an astonishing journey to Yale College, culminating in his selection for the first cohort of Schwarzman Scholars at Tsinghua University in China.

Returning to the world’s newest independent country, South Sudan, Lorem recognized that his nation’s lack of an education system was not only an obstacle to progress, but also an exceptional development challenge in its own right. Come to hear and meet Lorem if you have an interest in education challenges and social entrepreneurship in regions torn by histories of conflict and insecurity.

You will meet someone who calls his own education a miracle and also says that a million other school children in South Sudan cannot depend on such miracles. Lorem will also describe his evolving model for Kinyeti Academy, whose launch in 2023 will point the way to a different future.

Jeff Brenzel ‘75, former Yale Dean of Undergraduate Admissions and former executive director of the Yale Alumni Association, will introduce Lorem and moderate a discussion with the audience.

Following the talk and discussion, OIA and YASA will set out refreshments, and you will have the opportunity to meet Lorem and learn how you might volunteer with or otherwise support Kinyeti Academy.
