Contribution of Midwifery to Global Health

Jemima A. Dennis-Antwi is a registered nurse, midwife, public health nurse, Fellow of the West Africa College
of Nursing, and a Foundation Fellow of the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives. Over the last 27 years,
she has been involved locally and internationally with public service and development work in the health
sector in various managerial positions. In 2013, Dr. Dennis-Antwi became the first President of the Ghana
College of Nurses and Midwives. In this role, she led efforts to set the foundations for a formidable
professional, academic college. She has promoted postgraduate fellowship, specialist nursing and midwifery
education and continuous professional development in Ghana. From 2009-2013, she was the Regional
Midwifery Advisor for Anglophone Africa for the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) and
collaborated with UNFPA on the “Investing in Midwives and others with Midwifery Skills” program, which
was implemented in Africa, Asia and Latin America. As part of her work, Dr. Dennis-Antwi provided technical
assistance in midwifery strengthening to 10 African countries namely Ethiopia, Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone,
Malawi, Nigeria, Sudan, South Sudan, Uganda, and Zambia. Before joining ICM, Dr. Dennis-Antwi worked with
the American College of Nurse-Midwives as the Technical Advisor on the Ghana Community-based Health
Planning and Services (CHPS) Initiative. She also worked with Population Council as the Technical Advisor for
the US Presidential Malaria Initiative.
